Economic Depression- A Return to Home
Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 12:26PM This past weekend I carried a sense of heaviness that I could not seem to shake. I had had an exciting work week, full of new contacts and potential clients, so the possibilities were there and I couldn’t complain. Yet they seemed to be manifesting slower than what I or my anxiety wanted. And precisely because this was the area of work I specialize in, relationship to the material world and money, I knew I needed to pay attention.
As I did, as I opened up my awareness to my immediate surroundings- my front lawn on which I sat on drinking my morning cup of tea, the beautiful summer day in its sheer beginnings- I began to feel that I was being drawn down.
Downward, the same direction as depression, be it personal or economic, it heads downward towards the earth. When I noticed it, I wanted to simply sit still forever, contemplating the world, resting, being held. I wanted someone or something to tell me “it is going to be ok”. But most of all, I didn’t want to move.
I remembered a phrase I often tell the people whom I work with: “Depression comes from the word de+press, a time to take the foot of the pedal and rather to reflect and rest”. I have always known it is not the easiest advice to put into practice, mainly because it comes with the following:
Let go.
Open.
Surrender.
The world is taking care of you. Depression is an opportunity to really slow down and follow our natural flow. When we feel heavy or depressed it is a natural sign that indicates we need to slow down. Something needs to shift and we may not know what that it yet. Let it cook. Take the day to simply watch yourself, continuing on with your daily activities but bringing more awareness to what you do, how do you do it, how does that feel.
The messages from our daily lives will reveal what cycle is begin shed and what new one will begun, when it is ready. We can not presume to control outer nature, and there are aspects of our inner world that we do not control as well. Surrender to the greater mind that knows. Surrender to the greater heart that guides. Surrender to the body that knows when to rest. Let economic depression be a time to return to our homes.

The other day I was tying my son's shoelace and noticed that I was singing. When my kids talk to me now, I'm laughing and participating. After doing some reading on "kiwi drug" I have found that it inspired me to try taking a natural pill called 5-htp. I am feeling like a hole new woman which gives me strength to concentrate on my family and my career.
