Welcome to Inner Economics!
Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 06:57PM This website is dedicated to helping people reclaim the notion of Economics as the "management of the household". We are all managers of some sort, be it of our own small business, large corporation, national government or local NGO.
What I want to put forth here is that if we do not begin to see the management of our own inner lives as an economic activity, with its complex discovery of needs and allocation of resources, we will not be able to build a true platform of sustainability.
Economics is an art and a flow, and it has its own natural cycles. Currently we live in a time of deep recession which may feel terrifying to many. But I see it as a time of great opportunity and tremendous development and creativity. It is a time for growing roots and planting seeds- two basic requirements for future new growth.
At a recent course on "Embedding Holistic Economics" at Schumacher College, Chilean economist Manfred Max-Neef spoke about the importance of decoupling the notion of growth from that of development, stating that one does not equal the other, and that development does not require growth to exist.
We are at a time of development, of extending our roots within. Rooting firmly into the ground we will stand tall once again and spurt shoots of new life, but not until we first grow downward and receive nourishment from the earth and our soil. Then the natural cycles of economics could be see as: grow roots....grow tall....surrender....grow roots....grow tall....surrender.... It is a time to grow roots and surrender.
Economics rooted in life takes time, commitment and passion, but it can also be fun. Knowing what goes where, for its best use, is a measurement of efficiency as well as a skill of insight and intuition. The outer economic system can not and has not ever run without being grounded in the inner world. However, as a society as a whole, we lack the skills to bridge the experience and know-how of our inner and outer experience. Inner Economics attempts to help people better access the resources and capital they possess inside themselves, and use this as the foundation for long term sustainable growth.
